We all love this bad boy. It’s a fantastic manual exfoliator (as opposed to a chemical exfoliator) whose ingredients slowly dissolve as you work them into your face. There are no plastic beads grinding on your skin – only Brazilian black sugar that starts firm and melts away, preventing any irritation. Furthermore, the scrub is packed with shea butter and lanolin, so there is no dryness afterwards!
So what does this sugar mask claim to accomplish? First, it promises to act as a deep cleanser by removing any dirt or makeup. Secondly, it claims to soften and remove blackheads and oil deep in your pores. Lastly, it states it can do all of that while still keeping your skin soft, hydrated, and radiant. That is a lot of promises for one scrub. So I had to find out myself!!
Feel and consistency: I generally shy away from manual exfoliators simply because they usually hurt & make my skin feel a little raw and red. I also usually don’t feel like they do anything except strip my skin off. I had a different experience with this mask. Because it’s made with sugar, the scrubbing particles are more fine, and therefore, do not feel as sharp to the touch. Plus, sugar dissolves in water, so I’m not scrubbing for too long before it begins to melt into my skin. It’s a pretty smart concept, and it definitely helps to prevent irritation.
Scent: It took me a while to figure out what I was smelling. I figured it would just smell like sugar, but there is an overlying citrus scent – almost lemony. It’s not overwhelming and it smells very natural, like I just cut and squeezed a lemon into a bowl of sugar. There are no fake fragrances in this; it smells light and unprocessed.
When/how to use: I use after cleansing and before toning. If you have extra sensitive skin, some people recommend mixing it with more water, toner, or better yet, a cleansing oil. This will further lower the chance for irritation. After applying the scrub, I leave it on for 10-15 minutes, and then I rinse off gently with warm water.
Results: I’ve noticed a brighter and more even complexion since using this scrub. It’s weirdly such a relaxing step in my skincare routine because I always feel so fresh yet so hydrated after using it. That’s definitely due to the shea butter and lanolin – you can’t scrub without wool grease, am I right ladies!?
